Stopcock & Isolation Valve Repairs

Stuck, leaking or faulty water shut-off valve?

Gill Plumbing Services repairs and replaces main stopcocks and local isolation valves across Bromley, South East London and selected Docklands areas.

If a valve leaks, feels seized, or doesn't shut off the water properly, we assess its condition, access, and the best way to isolate the supply before recommending work.

A main stopcock controls the incoming water supply; a local isolation valve usually serves an individual fitting, such as a toilet or tap. A faulty valve can delay other plumbing repairs.

Send photographs and your postcode through WhatsApp, or call us to discuss an assessment. Do not force a seized valve.

Types of Stopcocks & Isolation Valves

Lever-Operated Isolation Valve

Lever-Operated Isolation Valve

A compact valve with a short, wing-shaped handle. If it becomes stiff, leaks or does not shut off the supply, we can inspect it and recommend suitable work.

Recognisable by its long handle, this valve controls the supply through the connected pipework. If it is difficult to operate or no longer shuts off reliably, contact us for an assessment.

Wheel-Operated Gate Valve

Screw-Operated Isolation Valve

Often found on pipework connected to water storage tanks. A seized handle or a wheel that turns without stopping the water can indicate a fault requiring investigation.

This compact valve has a slotted screw instead of a handle and commonly serves an individual tap or toilet. We assess valves that leak, seize or fail to isolate the supply.

Stopcock & Isolation Valve Questions

Please reach us at gillpropmaint@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Do not force the handle or use excessive leverage, as this could damage the valve or connected pipework.

We assess the valve’s condition and check how the water supply can be isolated before recommending repair or replacement.

In flats, the supply may involve a communal system. If access or a shared shutdown is needed, we explain what must be arranged with the managing agent before work proceeds.

Not always. A leak around the handle spindle may be repairable, while a leak at a pipe connection needs a different approach. A damaged valve body or a valve that no longer shuts off reliably may require replacement.

We identify where the leak is coming from, check the valve and surrounding pipework, and explain the suitable options before proceeding.

After the repair or replacement, we check for leaks and confirm that the valve shuts off the supply properly.

Yes. We replace faulty local isolation valves serving toilets, taps and other plumbing fittings. These valves allow the connected fitting to be isolated for maintenance without turning off the whole property’s supply.

Before removing the valve, we check how to shut off its incoming water supply. We also assess access, pipe condition and the space available for a suitable replacement.

If the work requires additional access or changes to the pipework, we explain these and agree the cost before proceeding.

Restricted access, corroded connections and damaged or altered pipework can affect the work required. A valve behind kitchen units or boxing may need additional access before it can be replaced.

We also need a reliable way to isolate the incoming supply. In flats or buildings with shared supplies, this may require arrangements with the managing agent or whoever controls the building’s water supply.

Send a close-up photograph of the valve and a wider photograph showing its location. We explain any foreseeable access work, shutdown arrangements and costs before proceeding.

The cost depends on the valve, access, pipework condition and how the water supply can be isolated. A readily accessible valve generally involves less work than one behind fixed units or connected to deteriorated pipework.

Send your postcode, a close-up photograph of the valve and a wider photograph showing its surroundings. We can then explain whether an inspection is needed and confirm any assessment charge before booking.

We explain the proposed work and costs, including VAT and any applicable materials, parking or travel charges, before you agree to proceed.
